Social Media is Not a Waste of Your Time: Here's Why.

A few weeks ago, I asked a group of small business owners about the value they see in social media for their business. Most said they loved social media, saying it helped them reach a ton of new customers. A few said they only really saw the value in paid social media. Surprisingly, a couple said it was a complete waste of time.

I couldn’t believe what I was hearing! Every day, I see countless small businesses with an AMAZING community online. You don’t need to go viral for social media to be worth it. Social media is your first impression online. It helps your current customers keep up to date with you and get to know you.

If you think social media is a waste of time for you and your business, let me give you five reasons it isn’t:

  • Customer Engagement: Social media allows you to have direct conversations with your customers. It’s a place where you can receive feedback, answer questions, and show that you care about their needs. This kind of engagement fosters loyalty and keeps your business top-of-mind.

  • Driving Website Traffic: Every post, story, or video is an opportunity to direct people to your website. By sharing compelling content and using calls-to-action, you can increase the number of visitors to your site and, ultimately, boost sales and conversions.

  • Building Credibility and Trust: A well-maintained social media presence helps establish your brand as credible and trustworthy. Customers often check social media profiles to see if a business is legitimate. Positive interactions and testimonials can reinforce their decision to choose you.

  • Networking Opportunities: Social media isn’t just about reaching customers; it’s also a powerful networking tool. Connect with other businesses, industry influencers, and potential partners to create opportunities for collaboration and growth. We’ve met some incredible people through social media!

  • Staying Competitive: In today’s digital age, not having a social media presence can put you at a disadvantage. Most businesses are already leveraging these platforms to reach their audience, so maintaining an active presence ensures you don’t get left behind.

There are so many benefits to social media, there's no way it could be a waste of time. But it also doesn’t have to take up all your time. You don’t have to post three times a day to have a great social media presence. In fact, it’s all about quality over quantity. Posting valuable, engaging content that resonates with your audience is more important than sticking to a rigid schedule. Social media is a versatile tool that allows you to connect with your audience in meaningful ways, whether through sharing updates, engaging in conversations, or showcasing your products and services creatively.
